The situation usually sounds like this: "I went under debt review two years ago, my payments are up to date, but something urgent came up and I need R5,000 this month. Who will help me?" The honest answer from any registered lender is the same, and it is worth understanding why.
What we see when you apply
With your consent we pull a credit bureau report. Before any score or affordability calculation, the report is checked for a small set of hard stops: an active debt review, a court judgement, a sequestration or administration notice, and a deceased marker. If the debt-review flag is present the application stops there. You will not be charged anything and the enquiry is recorded as any other bureau enquiry would be.
Why a lender who says yes is the problem
Some lenders advertise loans for people under debt review. Taking that credit can collapse your debt-review arrangement, expose you to the original creditors again, and mark the new credit as reckless. A lender willing to ignore the flag is not doing you a favour.
What actually helps
- Speak to your debt counsellor first. Your repayment plan can sometimes be restructured for a genuine emergency.
- If your debts are settled, ask the counsellor for the clearance certificate (NCA s.71). The bureaux must remove the flag once it is filed — only then can a registered lender consider you.
- Once the flag is cleared, apply with proof of income and three months of bank statements. A cleared debt review is not held against you in our affordability assessment.
Debt review cleared?
Use the pre-check to see what a registered lender could responsibly offer. The result is indicative until a formal affordability assessment is done.
